Lambada the movie

Got a kick out of seeing this movie for the first time as the music and fashion reeked of the ’80’s.  So you can imagine my surprise at one of the winning lines from the movie: “This is the ’90’s!”  The dancing was almost painful to watch, especially by the lead roles played by The Office’s Melora Hardin and J. Eddie Peck. Turns out, the choreography is done by one of the actors as well, that goes by the name Shabba Doo! Also they keep replaying the same songs over and over again, one of which is the theme which goes “We’re gonna set the night of fieyah- Lambada, Lambada”  The acting is quite bad and the actors looks quite old, I forgot they were supposed to be in high school.  The only saving grace is the pretty boy played by J. Eddie Peck who is pretty much just that- pretty.  So if you’ve nothing better to do on a weekend and don’t mind the thin storyline of math teacher by day, lambada dancer/unfortunate kids tutor at the dance club by night, by all means pop the movie into your player.  Just don’t say I didn’t warn you…

They really are adorable these two! I wonder what they’ll dance at their wedding. :)

Lisa Snowdon’s Argentine Tango (Strictly Come Dancing)

Here’s a clip from Strictly Come Dancing, the show Dancing with the Stars was based on. It features Britain’s Next Top Model host Lisa Snowdon doing the Argentine Tango with professional dance partner Brendan Cole.  She has the drama and passion of the dance, but seems to be a bit manlier than her partner.  Part of it, I think, is that she’s so tall! I enjoyed the timing and music selection, but what kind of disappointed me (not that I can do them any better) were her ganchos.  They seemed to be a bit unsure.  And her backward ochos (figure 8’s) looked  a bit messy.  (Another step I tend to be careless with) She did really well in the flying bits though and made those parts look really graceful.

Just a side note on how Brendan’s girlfriend Zoe Hobbs would come and watch his training sessions with Lisa according to Mirror just to make sure things stayed professional.  It’s happened one to many times that dance partners get too carried away.  There’s so much  juicy intrigue in the world of dance!

I just wish the judges’ comments were included in the clip above.  How do you think she did?

Dancing with the Stars Season 8 Line-Up

ABC’s Dancing with the Stars already announced the new 13 celebs that will be part of season 8’s line-up.

The people include: Belinda Carlisle, David Alan Grier, Jewel, Shawn Johnson, Lil’ Kim, Gilles Marini, Ty Murray, Steve-O, Nancy O’ Dell, Denise Richards, Lawrence Taylor, Chuck Wicks and Steve Woznak.  Of the list I only recognize Belinda Carlisle, Lil’ Kim, Jewel, and Denise Richards.  I’m a bit disappointed with the men they chose, as I really don’t know anyone. :(  They should’ve put Mark-Paul Gosselaar or Scott Baio in.  (Long live the 80’s!!!)

Scott Baio is already 46!!

Scott Baio is already 46!!

I watch almost every season of Dancing with the Stars but am not as psyched to see this coming season’s show.  It will have a 2-hr. season premier on March 9.  What do you guys think of the new line-up?

Red-hot Rumba

This is possibly one of the hottest rumbas I’ve ever seen performed by hottie Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff. Both are of Ukrainian descent and are professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars. (which is where above clip is from)  They were being teased by one of the show’s hosts (Samantha Harris) that they should date.  And apparently they are now engaged!  Though I’m not sure how compatible they are physically, they defiinitely move wonderfully together on the dancefloor.  And it seems from the article in the link above, they are already planning their family.  I wonder what children do to a dancing career?

Dirty Dancing: The Time of Your Life

This reality tv dance contest is of course based on the original Dirty Dancing movie way back in 1987 which had every girl swooning (myself included!) wanting to be Patrick Swayze’s dance partner. In fact it was created as a tribute to Dirty Dancing’s 20th year anniversary in 2007. I’ve only caught some episodes of the American version of this series and wasn’t too wowed. Couples seem to have the exact same choreography per dance which makes it a bit boring though they pick a new partner once they are told by the judges which dance they have to perform.

The vid above shows clips of the original Dirty Dancing movie’s Mountain Lake Resort and of the famous lift-in-the-water scene, and these bring back tons of happy summer memories. The resort actually offers dirty dancing lessons. And is it me or was that woman with the pixie haircut the actress that played Baby/Frances????

Basic Samba Step

Here’s a useful video on one of the hardest basic dance steps in one of the toughest Latin dances, the Samba. At least in my opinion.  It’s a great work-out once you get the hang of the one-a-two count.  Instructor in the video is Blackpool champion Edna Ledesma.  She demonstrates how to do Samba Whisks and the Bota Fogo. She also teaches at Studio 116 in Manila.

This is a group of 7 Spanish brothers called Los Vivancos. They give a whole new meaning to flamenco dancing, mixing some modern beats and flips here and there.  Try not to drool while watching this. I dare you.
